TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — No. 2 LSU did more than take down No. 1 Alabama on the road and grab control of the SEC West by handing the Crimson Tide their first loss of the season.

The 46-41 victory by the Tigers ended a long stretch of frustration to their rival as it was the program’s first win after eight consecutive losses to Alabama.

After the game, LSU coach Ed Orgeron wanted to make a statement at midfield about his program’s emergence as a College Football Playoff contender.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment … let’s break it down. Tigers on three. Because this is our house from now on,” Orgeron said with his Tigers players crowded around him.

The Tigers rode the hot hand of quarterback Joe Burrow, who threw for 393 yards and three touchdowns. He added 64 yards on the ground, as well.

There are three more games left in the regular season – against Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas A&M – for the Tigers before what is expected to be a matchup against Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 7.

If can navigate those four games, they’ll be in the field when the semifinals are announced.
